Jon, I'm not a hunter, but I was an armchair researcher for many years, and almost everytime I read a report about a hunter having a Bigfoot in their sites, they all said the same thing: "I couldnt shoot it; it looked too human."
Now - having said that, I've also read reports about folks shooting at Bigfoot. One of the Bigfoot recordings readily available on the web is what purports to be a Biggie moaning loudly after being shot, somewhere in Pennsylvania. I've read other stories of witnesses seeing a Bigfoot that looked as if it had a gunshot wound. Perhaps they are shot by hunters who occasionally mistake them for other prey animals when they are in some cover (after all, tragically, hunters mistakenly kill even fellow hunters every year - rarely of course, but it does happen).
There is a report on the BFRO website about an elderly gentleman who said he shot and killed one accidentally in the 1940's as a very young man; it was in some brush, and this man said he was tracking a moose that he had already shot & thought that the Biggie - who apparently was of the same or similar color - was the moose. Once he again shot what he thought was the moose he hit before, & came upon it dead on the ground, he knew it was no moose - or anything else he had ever encountered. When asked why he didnt tell anyone at that time, he said that he was a poor boy hunting for food out of season and was afraid of the trouble he would get into if he told authorities - besides, he had no idea of what it was that he had shot. What if it was some kind of human?
Anyway, thats pretty much it, from what I've read. Well, I'd like to add this; based on what Ive read over the years, I think more of these things have been shot and killed on military installations [Ft Lewis, Wa. especially] and by the occasional hunter than people realize, but the government hushes it up, and folks are reluctant to come forward for one reason or another. Hope this helped.

Dodgeman, Im not doubting you for one minute, but Im trying to work out why, hunters, like yourself, never 'engage' the target? I take my hat off to you for not just firing at any moving thing they see, but Im curious as to why you don't investigate further?
I live in a country where the biggest thing we hunt is deer, so I can't imagine what it must be like suddenly coming up against something much, much larger. But the first thing I was taught was, you identify the target, before even cocking your weapon. You certainly have have animals which are more than capable of 'turning the tables', and Iam curious as to whether fear, understandibly, or a sense of guilt, comes into play?
I really would like to hear yours & any ones thoughts on the subject.
