Bigfoot Sightings Winter Hiatus Ends…

Bigfoot Dance
Bigfoot Dance
From my Bigfoot watercolor sketchbook.

I took my usual winter break from Bigfoot blogging. There’s nothing quite like a hint of spring to bring back my joy at Bigfoot questing. This year I’m excited about my greater mobility (better tires, better vehicle) and am looking forward to miles on Klamath River Valley forest roads looking for … whatever’s out there.

Though I’d be excited to come across a cougar or a bear while driving the backroads, I’d be both excited and shocked to see a Bigfoot. That won’t keep me from hoping…

Now, just for fun, I’m going to reveal to you my list of amazing words and phrases that people used to find this site during the first nine days of March 2010. Each one of these words and phrases was put into the search box at a search site (usually Google, Yahoo, or Bing) and in response Bigfoot Sightings came up in the results, and someone chose to come to this site. I have been getting hundreds of hits daily, even with the site in winter hiatus condition… so the list is long. You’ll see it at the end of this posting.

I’m now going to choose five of those search queries at random and answer them! (Will continue with this game at a later date; only five for today.)

1. Bigfoot sightings in Florida … honestly, I’m not a Florida Bigfoot sightings expert, as I’ve never been in that state. However I did review a few websites that focus on that area: The Skunk Ape Files and Stocking Hominid Research. They were both part of the “Bigfoot Site of the Day” program I did last year between August and October. Speaking of this program, I might do something similar this year, but honestly I thought “Site of the DAY” was a bit too intense. I’m more likely to try “Site of the WEEK” this year.

2.  Northern California bigfoot association … I really don’t know of one. My partner and I have our own Friends of Sasquatch thing going on, but haven’t opened it for actual memberships by anyone else yet. That’s definitely on the table, but keep in mind our focus with that project is on communication via subtle energies, and as I understand it not everyone is into that, unfortunately. I think the world would be better if everyone could slow down and realize that all the buzz-buzz of electromagnetism in the air these days may be having an effect on your telepathic abilities. Every one of us has been subjected to radio and TV waves since birth, and things have gotten much worse in the last twenty years. Oh, don’t get me started! I’ve never owned a cell phone but occasionally we discuss it because being stuck in the mountains without a communication device could be a bad thing. On the other hand, neither of us cottons to the idea of holding one of those things up to our heads. ……………anyhow………….. if anyone out there knows of any Northern California Bigfoot associations please let me know. I think the museum in Willow Creek might be the closest we get to one. I know someone might say the museum in Felton (near Santa Cruz) could be one too (bless you, Mike Rugg!) but when you’re in REAL Northern California, way up north here, honestly… Santa Cruz County seems like Central California, not Northern!

3. Creepy things seen while on a atv – I love this one! You don’t think BIGFOOT could be CREEPY do you? I hope not! I don’t think Sasquatches are at all creepy. I feel they are more mystical, amazing, impressive, and respectable. The word ‘creepy’ just doesn’t fit. (Or maybe you’d like to differ with me on that?) I think this term brought my site into the search results because I recommended a forum thread on this type of thing a few months back: Weird Stuff Seen In The Woods.

4. Bigfoot paranormal … here’s another controversial search query. Is Bigfoot really paranormal? In other words, is Bigfoot an ordinary forest animal/tribal-being/creature/entity that lives, breathes, and eats just like humans do, only in a forest/cave/treetop atmosphere… or, is Bigfoot a shape-shifting/interdimensional/telepathic traveler through time or primordial goo that does amazing, mind-bending things that we can’t comprehend because we can’t do them? (Or maybe we can’t do those things because we can’t comprehend!) Anyhow, we covered that topic, to an extent, in the comment thread at Should Bigfoot Researchers Care About Shape Shifting Reports? My personal take on this is … yeah, we should. Why close your mind to anything just because it doesn’t fit with your version of what reality should be? Honestly, I could write good science fiction if I wasn’t currently so involved with Bigfoot fiction. (My work-in-progress…)

5. What does cryptid mean – Cryptozoology means – the study of hidden creatures. I wrote this post a long time ago: Cryptozoology – What Does The Word Mean? A cryptid is therefore a hidden creature – in that all information about it is hidden except for the reports of people who say they have seen them.

More answers to search queries later. Here’s the complete list of search queries from March 1 to March 9, 2010:

Squatchers: Be Careful in the Forest During Hunting Season!

By Linda Martin – © 2009

A few notes for those planning to do any squatching in the Klamath National Forest any time soon:

Klamath River ValleyFirst, be aware that this is the marijuana harvest season. This means that those who are holed up in our forest growing marijuana illegally will be paranoid and on edge. Do be very cautious and watch for forest marijuana farms — which should be cleared out by the end of October. These are not usually locally based growers. They often are growers from south of the border working for cartels. They are well armed, and dangerous. I wrote about this before recently: Marijuana – Danger in the Forest!

Second, the hunting season has just opened. Our area is inundated with deer and bear hunters this time of year. Deer season started Saturday, September 26. Hunters are encouraged to wear bright orange vests for safety. Visitors (including squatchers) should consider doing the same.

Happy Camp California Fire DangerThird, fire safety regulations require a fire permit, available at the Forest Service office. Use of the small portable gas/propane/petrol stoves also requires a fire permit. Smoking must be confined to vehicles, buildings, and developed recreational sites and campfire areas.

Internal combustion engines are to be used only on roads and designated trails. Engines must have spark arresting devices, including ATVs. This reminds me of the ATVs GABRO brought into our forest back in 2005. Such noisy devices! I’m sure any self-respecting Sasquatch heard them coming and found an appropriate place to conceal himself.

GABRO ATVs in 2005For more information, refer to the Klamath National Forest website.

Something else to be aware of: vehicle vandalism and theft.

On September 13 a visitor from Chico parked his vehicle on Klamathon Road near Collier’s Rest Area. This is at Highway 5’s Klamath River exit, about 70 miles east of Happy Camp. While the owner was rafting on the Klamath someone broke into his vehicle and took wallets, cash, cell phones, backpacks, and a video camera. Sad to know there’s a thief running around loose there near Yreka somewhere.

I wish I could say that behavior is confined to the more “civilized” area of our county, but I saw something recently that made me think that vehicles parked along the Klamath River Highway may not be entirely safe either. An old truck was parked on the side of the Bigfoot Scenic Byway a few miles downriver from Happy Camp. We passed it in the morning; later when we came back the windows had all been broken! Since then, we don’t leave our vehicles parked on the highway. I’ve also heard that vehicles left at trail heads are subject to being broken into or vandalized. If you have a beater, sometimes that’s the better choice for a Klamath River adventure if you’re planning to leave the vehicle untended while you hike into the wilderness. A sad state of affairs. I would love it if all people were trained in the ways of compassion since birth. Unfortunately, that’s not the civilization we’ve got right now.

Whistles and Whoops – Follow-up with the Forest Service Wildlife Biologist

Berries - Nearby Food Source

What are these? (Click to enlarge.)

Today I went to the local Forest Service office to speak to the wildlife biologist, a young man who took a few minutes out of his busy day to do some brainstorming with me about what local animal could be whooping and whistling in the forest near Happy Camp.

[Reference: My first post about the whoops and whistles I heard.]

He suggested an owl, egret, or heron. I listened to sound files and YouTube videos of bird sounds. The only one that comes close so far is this fishing heron that does a bit of whistling. The quality of the whistle wasn’t an exact match, but that’s a possibility. This heron’s whistle has a bit of trilling to it, which I didn’t hear. And it isn’t combined with a whoop… so the jury is still out.

Klamath River rapids nearby
Rapids at the bottom of the cliff.

He told me there’s a rookery downriver from Happy Camp. I know there’s one at the end of the human-occupied territory, across from the crushed rock business. I scanned the river at my research location further down and couldn’t see any herons or other birds fishing. I did hear birds twittering in the area today, mostly from a distance, but didn’t see any. I also scanned the trees across from where I sit, looking for nests; nothing found yet.

I enjoyed my talk with the wildlife biologist. He says he doesn’t believe there’s any Bigfoot in our forest. I told him a little about Bigfoot sightings near Happy Camp but got the distinct impression that his woo-woo tolerance level was exceeded by the end of our conversation.

I have now spent eight mornings sitting by the river in this one particular spot and during that time I’ve heard the whoops and whistles only once. Today I was out there again. I had my SanDisk on but it didn’t pick up any sounds except the river. Perhaps I should find another location that isn’t so close to a series of rapids. I also am devising ways to save the money for better recording equipment.

More on this issue if/when there’s anything worth reporting!

Tribal Bigfoot – Comments on Chapter Two: “The Bigfoot Map Project”

Bigfoot Reading Group
Tribal Bigfoot by David Paulides

Review by Linda Martin – @2009

Reading group homepage for this book: Tribal Bigfoot

Re: Chapter Two of Tribal Bigfoot, “The Bigfoot Map Project.”

David Paulides spent all of chapter two writing about the statistics behind his Bigfoot sightings map of four Northern California counties. It is a short chapter – only eight pages, which includes charts. He compiled a list of over 350 sightings (from the 1800’s to 2008) that took place in those four counties and arranged with the California State Automobile Association to use their map for the project. The map features sightings in Del Norte, Humboldt, Trinity, and Siskiyou Counties.

I live in Siskiyou County which includes Happy Camp and Mt. Shasta, so I found the statistical information of interest. The chart on page 53 credits Siskiyou with the least number of sightings per square mile but this is a large county and the eastern part has less forest. Happy Camp, where I live, is in the western section and is surrounded by the Klamath National Forest. According to this chart, Del Norte has one sighting per 17 square miles compared to Siskiyou County’s 1 sighting per 134 square miles. I’m suggesting that’s not because we have fewer Bigfoot, but because our county is more than six times the size of Del Norte County and our population less than twice as much as theirs. Most of Siskiyou County is uninhabited (by humans) forested land.

One could analyze the data provided by Paulides to guess that Bigfoot prefers the coastal mountains and forests, but then he also wrote that “A vast majority of the sightings fall into our elevation theory, sightings in California predominantly fall into a range focusing on 2400 feet with the majority 1600- 3200 feet.’ (See Blog # 47) Compare this with his statement that “69% of all the listed sightings/incidents logged on the map are within 40 miles of the coast.” (Page 59 in the book.)

The elevation of Happy Camp is only 1085 so I think it is safe to say that the area between here and the coast are not at the 2400′ level except for hilltops. (There’s more discussion of the preference of Bigfoot for coastal areas in the book.) Personally I’m not putting much weight on the elevation theories he’s coming up with (there’s also something about two huts at 350′ elevation mentioned on one of Michael Rugg’s videos – see episode #25) but I’ll keep my mind open in case something substantial is proven about Bigfoot and elevations.

He lists population density in his chart but doesn’t comment much on that aspect. If there are more people, then it makes sense that there will be more sighting opportunities. In Humboldt County there are 128,330 residents according to his chart. That county correspondingly has the highest number of sightings of the four counties analyzed: 124. That is one sighting per 1035 people. In comparison Siskiyou County has less than half the population – 45,091 people – with 1 sighting per 959 people for a total of 47 sightings.

Out here in the western section of Siskiyou County, in the Klamath National Forest, we’ve got about 2,182 residents in the Happy Camp census district. Happy Camp had 1277 in the year 2000 census but the census district includes residents of Seiad Valley and others up and down the Klamath River Highway. With 8 local sightings (according to Paulides – I’m aware of more) that’s 1 per 273 people. This rivals Trinity County’s 1 per 231 people.

There are also tourists to take into consideration – they are a great source of sighting reports. They tend to congregate on the coast — very few decide to make the long trip into the heart of the Klamath National Forest.

So there are a few more statistical considerations for the area of this Bigfoot map project. Perhaps you can come up with other ideas for analyzing the statistics that I haven’t thought about.

Whoops and Whistles – What Did I Hear?

By Linda Martin – @2009 – http://www.bigfootsightings.org

Oak-Madrone-Pine-Fir
My van was concealed behind these trees
at the time I heard the whoops and whistles.

Yesterday I was writing in my journal while sitting next to the Klamath River a few miles outside of town, about 11 am, when I heard a couple whoops, then a whistle, then a brief silence, and then more whoops and whistles. That was all. The whole thing lasted less than a minute. The whoops and whistles didn’t sound like any animals I know of in the forest near here.

I just spent some time listening to various Bigfoot sound recordings on the internet. I finally found something that sounds like what I heard on a BFRO page of Bigfoot/Sasquatch related sound recordings. The sound titled, “Whoops and Knocks” from California in 1974 has a very similar whooping sound… very short whoops. And further on down the page there’s one titled, “Growls and Whistling” that has similar whistling sounds.

I’m not saying I heard Bigfoot. All I’m saying here is that I heard sounds I thought were unusual for this forest, and that I thought they might have come from a Bigfoot. On the other hand they might have come from something else, and I’m open to suggestions here.

Klamath National Forest
This is the area where I believe
the strange sounds were coming from

The sounds I heard came from the wooded hillside on the south side of the river, across from where I was sitting. It has been suggested to me that the sounds could have been made by river rafters going through the rapids at the bottom of the cliff I sat next to, but I don’t think so for several reasons. First, they didn’t sound human. Second, there were no other sounds associated with rafters such as laughter and talking. Third, I think that if someone was experiencing a moment of excitement going through the rapids, they wouldn’t give two short “Whoop, Whoop” sounds, then whistle. What I heard sounded feral and animal-like.

Klamath River Kayakers
If you click on this picture to enlarge it
you’ll see the two kayakers I saw today.
I did not see or notice any river rafters
or kayakers yesterday when I heard
the strange whooping and whistles.

Today I was back in the same place for more journaling when I heard a shout coming from the canyon. I looked and saw two kayaks on the river bank. The owner of the voice was hiking around somewhere. This kind of human sound is much different from what I heard yesterday, so I’m not at all convinced of the river rafter theory, and my friend here isn’t at all convinced that I heard whoops and whistles worth writing about, especially in this Bigfoot blog. What do you think? Should I have kept it to myself?

The only recording device I have is my SanDisk (like an IPod) but the sound isn’t downloadable to my computer. However I will keep it on next time I go to this section of the river for my morning journal writing session just in case I’m lucky enough to hear something like this again. I’d like to at least be able to show my friend what it is I heard.

For the record, there have been Bigfoot sighting reports of encounters on the Klamath River Highway on this side of town, in 2003 (a local teenager) and 2005 (a visiting pastor from a large congregation in Southern California.)

How to Find Bigfoot

Bigfoot Scenic BywayI’ve seen a lot of people come and go here in the Klamath River Valley — Bigfoot researchers looking for Northern California Bigfoot action. It saddens me that they can stay only a few hours or days — then must return to their city jobs in other parts of the country.

Yes, the Bigfoot Scenic Byway is prime Bigfoot territory and home to the Patterson-Gimlin film site, but let’s not forget that Bigfoot can be found in almost every state.

Do you want to find Bigfoot?

If you live near a forested area, consider spending more time there on a regular, hopefully daily basis. Check Bigfoot sighting databases online to see where Bigfoot has been seen in your state. Choose a nearby sighting location and make it your home away from home. The regularity of your being there will be a possible draw for a curious Sasquatch.

Oregon Bigfoot National Sightings Database

What to do while you’re there

Offer music and food. Look for footprints and broken tree branches. Do some howling and wood knocking and rock pounding. Announce your presence as well as you can, then show yourself as a harmless, nature-loving companion that Bigfoot might consider visiting. If you play acoustic guitar or flute, take your musical instrument with you. Maybe Bigfoot will be curious to see where the beautiful sounds are coming from. A dulcimer, recorder, or djembe would work well too.

West Branch Campground
One of my favorite local areas,
West Branch Campground

I find that a few hours alone in the woods can be a profoundly peaceful experience. I usually take my journal to write in and a comfortable chair to sit in when I’m not hiking around, looking at things. I don’t take food — at least, not for myself — because I’m not there to attract bears. Many researchers leave food in the forest hoping Bigfoot will discover and appreciate it. You might like to read Ray Crowe’s article on baiting. Be aware that some counties have ordinances against feeding wildlife. Stay on the safe side of the law.

Don’t forget, Bigfoot are nocturnal. If possible, spend the night in your research location every now and then. Take a night vision scope if you have one.

Psychological considerations

I believe that motivation is a big factor in whether or not you’ll attract a Bigfoot to your research area. If your motivation is to capture or kill, they may sense that and stay away. I know many researchers have the desire to prove that Bigfoot exists, so they think only a body (dead or alive) can do that. Purify your motivations and you may have a better chance of connecting with a Sasquatch. Many people believe that Bigfoot has eluded captivity for so long because they are wise and possibly quite psychic.

Your intention to have contact with a Bigfoot may work to draw them to you. Have faith that it will happen! Put yourself in the right place on a regular basis and you’re more likely to see one than if you stayed home in front of your computer or TV.

One more thing — if you’re full of fear, will Bigfoot sense it? Be emotionally prepared for what you might see!

Establishing your own nearby Sasquatch research area is much more practical than a trip across country to see the place where Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin saw one. Of course, you’re welcome to come check it out, but Bigfoot research doesn’t have to be an occasional thing. You’ll have a better chance for a sighting if you put yourself out there every day, and that means doing it close to home.

Marijuana – Danger in the Forest!

Marijuana

It is nearly marijuana harvest season and anyone entering the backwoods here in Northern California should be aware of the dangers from farmers of illegal marijuana. The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department found that marijuana farms in the forest have similar characteristics. If you’re planning to do any squatching in our forest, know what to look for.

According to the Sheriff’s department, forest marijuana farms usually have a boundary of tree branches piled high around them. If you see anything like that it is best to walk away. Another sign you might notice is PVC pipes or hoses dipped into a creek as a water supply. If you ever see anything of that nature in the forest, it is time to head in a safer direction. Owners or caretakers of the marijuana farms are usually armed and dangerous.

It is believed that most of the illegal marijuana farms in my area (Klamath National Forest) are tended by growers from south of the California border; they come here to hide in our forest and grow marijuana for a cartel. The marijuana is now starting to bud so harvest will come soon, in September or early October.

Mill Creek Marijuana Farm

This is a high-dollar, high-risk business and growers do not care about the safety of anyone out looking for Bigfoot.

These farms have been found deep in the woods near logging roads, or even close to towns and near busy roads. Be careful when you’re out there squatching. Summer may not be the best time. Perhaps if marijuana is legalized in California, the situation will ease.

David Paulides interviewed for the Eureka Times-Standard

Bigfoot is not imaginaryThe Eureka Times-Standard is the closest major newspaper to the site of Patterson’s 1967 Bigfoot filming. Bluff Creek is north-east of Eureka; both places are in Humboldt County, California which is just east of Siskiyou County, where I live.

Author and Bigfoot researcher David Paulides was interviewed for a May 30, 2009 article about his investigation and book on Hoopa Bigfoot sightings. I’ve already written a review of that book: The Hoopa Project.

In the article, Bigfoot is not at all imaginary for many inland residents, a paragraph from The Hoopa Project is printed – about a sighting by the local supermarket manager. It took place in front of what used to be a computer store on Highway 96. The man was driving to work one early morning from Willow Creek and clearly saw a Bigfoot standing on the highway. Until that time he was a Bigfoot skeptic.

This is only one of many fascinating Bigfoot sighting reports documented in The Hoopa Project.

Now – Good News – David Paulides has had another Bigfoot book published. I haven’t read it all yet, and my full book review will have to wait a while. The new book is Tribal Bigfoot.

The new book contains reports from many Northern California locations as well as Oklahoma and Minnesota. One of his investigations was an interview with Collette Alexander, whose Bigfoot story was originally posted here on Bigfoot Sightings: Santa Cruz, California Bigfoot Sighting, 1999.

I’m a Siskiyou County resident living in Happy Camp in the center of the Klamath National Forest – so I found the chapter on our county of interest. He interviewed and wrote about Darrell Whiteaker, who I don’t know; Lars Larsen, a long-time Happy Camper I am acquainted with; and Tara Hauki, who I know quite well and who comments on this site from time to time.

Other chapters in the book: Historical Bigfoot, The Bigfoot Map Project, Associations, Extreme Sighting Locations, Santa Cruz County, Amador County, Trinity County, Del Norte County, Humboldt County, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and The Bigfoot/Hairy Man/Human Connection.

Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it?

In the meantime I’ve been reading Bigfoot Encounters in New York and New England – a book by Paul B. Bartholomew and Robert E. Bartholomew – brothers. I will post my review soon!

Life in Bigfoot Country: Happy Camp, California

Because I live in a place where there have been many sightings, I am fortunate to be able to meet a lot of the Bigfoot researchers who come into town. During the next couple of weeks I’ll be writing about some of the Bigfoot research people I’ve met here over the last three years since I started this blog in 2005.

In the meantime I’ll tell you more about my small town, what I’m doing here, and how I decided to start a blog about Bigfoot.

View of Happy Camp
Happy Camp, California
Bigfoot Country!
Klamath National Forest

Happy Camp is a very small town in the center of the Klamath National Forest. There were 1211 people living here during the year 2000 census. Even though I’ve lived in Happy Camp over eight years, I still don’t know everyone in town. Plus there are always new people moving in. I can’t keep up with them all.

During the summer we get lots of tourists. Mainly we get several hundred gold prospectors and their families. These are people who join the New 49ers gold prospecting club, of which I am a member. Though I love gold prospecting the membership is mainly used by my boyfriend, Bob.

Happy Camp Post Office Bigfoot
The Happy Camp Post Office Bigfoot Statue

Most of the other tourists are rafting groups stopping off in Happy Camp for food and supplies.

We also have hundreds of firefighters here during the summer. Almost every summer there’s a fire nearby, and firefighters are stationed at the base camp at our local elementary school. Thanks to firefighters and rafting groups, the restaurant I work in can get very busy!

Bigfoot researchers visiting our area are few in number, but I still have been able to meet quite a few… mostly by way of pure luck since these meetings are usually unplanned. If you’re going to be in town, it wouldn’t hurt to send an email first.

Bigfoot Towing
Scotty’s Bigfoot Towing

I moved here in January 2000 because I wanted to raise my two youngest children in a rural area. When I pulled into town and saw the wooden Bigfoot statue in front of the post office, I was pleased. I’ve always wanted to see a Bigfoot, and I knew I was moving to the right place.

Around town many of the businesses are named after Bigfoot. There’s Scotty’s Bigfoot Towing, the Bigfoot Apartments (what’s left of them after the big fire), the Bigfoot Car Wash, the Bigfoot RV Park, and of course there was JavaBob’s Bigfoot Deli but that’s been closed now for about two years.

Cheryl Wainwright and her Bigfoot sculpture.

and its creator, Cheryl Wainwright

About a year after I moved here a local artist started a Bigfoot sculpture project. She invited every Happy Camp citizen to donate metal to be used in creating a large metal Bigfoot sculpture. It is placed prominently at the corner of Davis Road and Highway 96. That’s also the eastern edge of the Bigfoot Scenic Byway. The other end of the Byway is in Willow Creek, where the Bigfoot Museum is.

There’s another wooden Bigfoot statue in front of Evan’s Mercantile now too.

While we’re talking about artwork, I need to tell you that a local friend of mine, Dennis Day, created what we believe is the largest dreamcatcher in the world. It is on the other end of Davis Road, not far from the metal Bigfoot sculpture.

In 2001 I founded Happy Camp News – which I’ve now sold. The first story I did for the news was on the celebration we had for the grand opening of the Bigfoot Scenic Byway. That took place on April 1, 2001. I wonder if the Forest Service chose April Fool’s Day intentionally for that event. At the same time we celebrated and cut the ribbon over the highway, there was a similar celebration down the road in Willow Creek.

Willow Creek and Happy Camp also have twin Bigfoot celebrations. Willow Creek has Bigfoot Days and Happy Camp has the Bigfoot Jamboree. Each year we have princess and queen contests, raffles, music, vendors, and a parade. It is a lot of fun. There are contests for the kids, and often a Forest Service demonstration of rappelling from a helicopter. The Karuk Tribe sometimes does a salmon bake dinner.

With all this hoopla about Bigfoot in this little village of Happy Camp, I was curious about whether there was any true substance to the idea that there were Bigfoot in the forest near our town. During the Bigfoot Scenic Byway grand opening celebration a local Karuk (Native American) man gave a short speech about Bigfoot sightings here. Unfortunately he didn’t have much information to share. He said it started with a group of Chinese miners who had a sighting over 100 years ago near Thompson Creek. Soon enough I discovered that most of the people in town were totally clueless about sightings near here – so I wondered why people were naming their businesses after Bigfoot and making such a big deal over it.

Little Grider Creek
Little Grider Creek
South West of Happy Camp

The next specific information I got about a local sighting was in 2003. A member of the Chamber of Commerce came to a board meeting (I was a member of the board of directors at the time). She said a local teenager had a sighting near Little Grider Creek but that he didn’t want to talk about it or be identified. It was another couple of years before I finally figured out who that teenager was, but I knew Little Grider Creek. It is less than a mile from my home, and on many occasions I’ve walked down there. Once I got in the creek and walked upstream for about a mile. I also had a habit of sitting on the rocks under the highway overpass, reading a book on a hot summer day or finding protection from a winter rainstorm. So to hear that a sighting took place there shook me up. That’s so close to home!

For details of this and other Bigfoot sightings near my home, see my Squidoo lens: Happy Camp Bigfoot Sightings.

In 2005 the Chamber of Commerce had a meeting with two women who were marketing specialists working on regional travel magazines. One suggestion one of the women shared was to choose a theme and direct most of our marketing efforts to that group. For an example, she suggested marketing Happy Camp to rafting companies and giving them reasons to want to stop here rather than float on by.

That got me to thinking. Happy Camp already had a theme. Bigfoot. Yes, Bigfoot businesses, Bigfoot statues, a Bigfoot Jamboree… and even Bigfoot footprints painted on the sidewalk in front of our hardware store. Yet nobody here wanted to talk about Bigfoot. Nobody knew about local sightings. Suddenly I knew I had to change that. I decided to do a Bigfoot research project to find out if this little town in the center of the Klamath National Forest had any reason to be claiming that Bigfoot lives in the area. That’s when I bought my domain name, BigfootSightings.Org. I also bought the domain, BigfootHunt.Com, but later discarded it because I don’t believe in hunting them… it brings up connotations of killing and I definitely don’t believe in killing Sasquatch.

My first blog posting here at Bigfoot Sightings happened in the spring of 2005. I think it was the very first Bigfoot themed blog, and I’d like to know if anyone knows of one that started before mine did. At the time I didn’t know much about Bigfoot but I was already into blogging. I’d been doing it since 2000. I unfortunately lost all my early Bigfoot Sightings postings in a site crash in 2006 or 7… but maybe that’s a good thing. I started over and am happy it happened.

In the last three years I’ve discovered that there have been many recent Bigfoot sightings around Happy Camp – so our theme of Bigfoot-mania is definitely valid. I’d love to get more reports of Bigfoot sightings around here but I’ve also discovered that most people who have sightings don’t like to talk about them.

The Eddy on Indian Creek

For those that do want to share, I’m willing to maintain anonymity while sharing the details with others. The sooner we find out about Happy Camp Bigfoot sightings, the sooner my partner and I can follow up. If we get a report within a few days of the sighting we can go look for footprints and other physical evidence.

Suggestion: If you come here during the summer, be prepared to jump into one of our many local swimming holes. There’s a lot of clean, cool streams here with areas worth swimming in. With all that available water, you can understand why the region is ideal for Bigfoot too.

Happy Camp is only fifty miles from Bluff Creek where the famous Patterson-Gimlin film was taken. We’re also about thirty miles south of Oregon Caves where Dr. Matthew Johnson had his sighting in 2000. He came over the mountain to tell us about it once, and was a featured speaker at our Bigfoot Jamboree.

Any questions or comments about Happy Camp and local Bigfoot sightings will be welcome here.

About Bigfoot Sightings and the Comments Here

Here on Bigfoot Sightings, there are a lot of fascinating comments. Many visitors to this site have posted comments about their sightings, and some Native Americans have posted about ancient knowledge related to Bigfoot. But these comments might be hard to find or read if site visitors have to wade through a lot of nonsense.

I just went through the comments and deleted a lot of spam, silly and annoying comments that looked like they came from junior high school age kids, and comments with obscenities tossed in. I’m usually not into deleting comments, but why should I let my site be a forum for someone else’s trash?

I want to respond in particular to one comment that suggested I only post when I have been on a ’successful’ Bigfoot expedition. I guess that would mean an expedition where I found Bigfoot or some evidence of his existence. Well, sorry, but that kind of success is rare, and if I wanted to post only about that, I’d have few postings here! So what I post about here are about sightings others have had, or about our research activities.

No, I don’t have a lot of pictures of Bigfoot here. Though my cabin is surrounded by places where Bigfoot sightings have taken place (within a mile of where I live) I haven’t seen one! I have this site to talk about my research and things we’ve learned about Bigfoot. I won’t make up a sighting incident or print false information, so you won’t find me telling you wild stories about how he visits our home or contacts me regularly. I honestly WISH I could tell you these things, but I won’t because it isn’t true. What I can tell you about is what it is like to live in an area known for sightings, and what it is like to look for Bigfoot in the Klamath National Forest.

Oak Knoll Ranger District, North of Seiad Valley

Seiad CreekLast Saturday my Bigfoot research partner and I explored the wilderness north of Seiad Valley in the Oak Knoll Ranger District of the Klamath National Forest. This is an area in Northern California where Bigfoot footprints have been found; I’ve spoken to one first-hand witness and heard of several others.

We traveled north on Seiad Creek Road which borders the creek until there’s a bridge crossing the creek, at which point the road veers to the right and up a hill. Great views! The road continues all the way to Oregon.

The first photo is Seaid Creek. I took this photo from the little bridge that crosses Seiad Creek Road. There were other much more picturesque areas on the creek, but I got no photos of them. I’ve heard there are several swimming holes and waterfalls, but we didn’t see them. There was also a recent marijuana farm bust in the area; when hiking in the forest, be aware that the Mexican mafia uses the forest for marijuana crops and can be very dangerous if detected. Signs to watch for are hedges of dried and broken branches, and pvc pipe near streams.

Ridge in the Oak Knoll RD north of Seiad ValleyThe second photo is a ridge in an area where Bigfoot prints were found. We spent a lot of time scanning this area, as I’ve been considering it for Bigfoot research for several years. I don’t know if I’ll be able to get into the back country, so I’m leaving this information here for other researchers who may be looking for new locations to explore.

This ridge is not far from the location of Dr. Matthew Johnson’s well-documented and credible Bigfoot sighting in July 2000 at Oregon Caves, south of Cave Junction, Oregon.

Broken bridge over Seiad CreekThe third photo is of me, crossing an old, broken and abandoned bridge. The bridge may have been as old as 100 years; of course we have no way of knowing the exact age. It was made from two large logs with planks across them.

We crossed the stream here and hiked uphill on a very old dirt road, then came to the ruins of an old cabin. It seemed to have burned, and we guessed it may have been burned by the forest service to discourage people from trying to move in. As you can see, there was also an attempt to burn the large logs of this bridge. Beyond the destroyed cabin, there was a hiking trail which we intend to return to.

Linda Martin climbing the bank of Seiad CreekThe fourth photo is of me, climbing up the west bank of the creek next to the destroyed bridge. It may look like I’m holding a cigarette… but I’m not. That’s a twig in the background. I’m not a cigarette smoker. Note the Bogger.Com hoodie… I used to use Blogger.Com but switched to WordPress a few years ago.

Anyhow, it is a great area for exploration, and easy to access. To get there travel west from Highway 5 on the State of Jefferson Scenic Byway, Highway 96, to Seiad Valley, which is 18 miles west of Happy Camp, California. Turn north on Seiad Creek Road. Soon it becomes a dirt road and the further north you get, the rockier it becomes. It goes all the way to Oregon. Of course, the road is closed during winter due to snow.

About the photos: My Bigfoot research partner and I hold the copyrights on these photographs. Do not take them and use them without our permission! I always have to mention this on this site because people have stolen photos from me in the past and used them online and in other publications. That is a copyright violation. Please don’t do it!

Possible Bigfoot Habitat Destroyed By Forest Fire

The Little Grider FireI’m sorry to report that an area of the forest that I considered to be a likely Bigfoot habitat near Happy Camp has been incinerated by a recent forest fire. The Little Grider Fire ignited on top of a hill right next to the one I live on on July 14, 2007.

A lightning storm three days before brought over 1200 lightning strikes to the Klamath National Forest. By the next day fire fighters were working to control about 55 fires. The Little Grider Fire probably smoldered a few days before bursting into flames. The only other explanation is that it could have been intentionally set, but that’s very unlikely and locally, nobody seems to believe or talk about that theory.

Little Grider Fire behind Parry’s MarketHere in Happy Camp, we’re used to having fire fighting activity during the summer – but usually the fires are far enough away from town that we’re not terribly concerned about anything but air quality issues. This year, however, the fire was less than a mile from town between my home and Little Grider Creek.

I was out of town for my birthday on July 13. When I arrived home the next evening at 11:30pm, I was shocked and worried when I saw the forest fire nearby. I contacted a local deputy that night and talked to other local residents while we looked at the fire map outside the post office after midnight. The deputy said evacuations were a strong possibility but that I’d be safe at home that night.

The next few days were full of town meetings, packing, storing valuables, and expecting the worst. But many prayers were answered when a heavy rainstorm stalled and put out most of the fire a few days later.

Smoke over Happy CampStill, the fire fighters did a lot of back burning in the area, to decrease underbrush and make the forest around Happy Camp more fire-safe. My partner complained about the animals of our forest whose habitats were being destroyed, and about the air quality, which was wretched. Our valley was full of smoke for days. I’m glad to say that’s over for now and the crews that remain in town are doing mop-up on the Little Grider Fire. The only local people evacuated were those living about ten miles south of town near Elk Creek Road, who were in the path of another fire. Those people are also considered to be Happy Campers though they live outside of town.

I’m very disappointed that this fire spread as far as it did, because I believe that Bigfoot lived in the area. Hopefully if so, they survived in caves, or moved on before the flames reached them.

A few Happy Camp Bigfoot sighting locationsThere have been at least five separate Bigfoot sightings in this area during the last five years, so naturally I had my eye on the nearby forest and have traveled through many times, hoping to see something while driving on the old logging roads.

The map shows the area of the Little Grider Fire, about half-way through it. The stars are Bigfoot sighting locations nearby. Here’s a list of some of those local sightings:

1. A man claimed to have seen a Bigfoot on the hill above Buckhorn Road in 2005. He later recanted.

2. Other sightings also took place on Buckhorn Road in 2005. An unusually large Bigfoot footprint was found half-way up that hill later that summer. The reporter had two separate sighting experiences within a month.

3. An unconfirmed sighting reported to me took place at a picnic table near the airport. A man said he was eating lunch and noticed young Bigfoot (possibly more than one) playing in the forest nearby. I don’t know the year this happened, so it may not have been recent.

4. In 2002 a local teenager was driving down Highway 96 when he saw a large dark creature run across the road near Little Grider Creek.

5. In 2005 a Southern California minister said he saw a large dark creature jump down onto the highway in front of his car, then stand and cross the highway in only two strides.

I don’t want you to think that this fire destroyed all our local Bigfoot habitat; there have been Bigfoot sightings in other areas nearby, and you can tell from the photo above that the Klamath National Forest is vast, with many thousands of acres of possible Bigfoot territory. But this area of the Little Grider Fire was what I considered to be our best local hot spot because of the number of sightings in the area.

Linda Martin

Linda Martin at the Klamath River, Northern California

Hi, I’m Linda Martin. I’ve been fascinated by Bigfoot for many years.

Early in 2005 I decided to start a Bigfoot research project using this weblog as a place to record my observations. My research includes exploration of the Klamath National Forest, where I live. The first posting in this blog was dated April 4, 2005. In 2007 I redesigned this site and deleted the older messages.

In 2007 I closed my web design business. I also recently sold Happy Camp News to another local writer.

I’m a novelist in my spare time. My writing site: Perspectives on Writing.

I live in the center of the Klamath National Forest where Bigfoot sightings are common. I could not ask for a better place to do Bigfoot research.

Why Not Report It?

Around here (Happy Camp, California) people see Bigfoot but few report it. For a while, when JavaBob was in town, people would go to him and tell him about things they’d seen. He was a friendly deli owner everyone in town knew, and easy to talk to. But since he left last year there’s no central meeting place, and people aren’t talking. Why do you suppose that is? My guesses are (1) that they don’t want people to think of them as crazy; too many people, even locals, are verbally abusive toward people who say they’ve seen Bigfoot. And (2) they think they are protecting Bigfoot by not giving away the location of the one they saw. Am I missing any other important reasons here? All I’m asking for is a location to research. A new sighting here in the Klamath National Forest, or somewhere nearby, would give my partner and I a place to go look for recent footprints and other signs to verify what is reported as a Bigfoot sighting. But without a report, I’m having to rely entirely on my intuition.
